What master's programs in fiction should I apply? ?
I am applying to programs in New York in May, and that's where I live, but I would like to apply over five other states. I would like some experience in teaching. Financial assistance would be great, of course. I am a woman Filipino, and I would go somewhere that supports women of color … but that's not a necessity. I would like to hear from people who loved their programs instead of just watching to USA and New test scores. Any advice is appreciated!
If you have not already, I suggest that Wrtiers Association and Writing Programs (AWP) Guide to write programs. It has detailed descriptions of the various financial assistance programs. You can order it here: http://awpwriter.org/bookshelf/guide.htm I would also suggest reading these articles on creative writing programs in the Atlantic magazine: http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200707u/writing-programs/2 in terms of specific recommendations, anyone seriously considering a master's degree in creative writing has to consider at least the superb program University of Iowa Some others who have excellent reputations: Univ of California-Irvine, Johns Hopkins, Brown University, University of Arizona, Syracuse University, and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Students of color is a very welcoming community in all these institutions. Good luck! Carolyn Lawrence-AdmissionsAdvice.com
